Hispanic Entrepreneurship Today

According to a study by the Stanford Latino Entrepreneurship Initiative, the number of Latino-owned businesses in the U.S. is growing at a rate that outpaces just about every other ethnic group 1. Between 2012 and 2017, the number of employer Latino-owned businesses (LOBs) grew by 14%, which is over twice the U.S. average of 6%

Annual Latino-Owned Business Study, Biz2Credit finds that Latino-owned businesses have lower average annual revenues (8% lower than non-Latino businesses) and lower average earnings (19% lower).

While more than 30% of all family-owned businesses survive into the second generation, only 12% will still be viable into the third. Even more surprising is that only 3% are still operating in the fourth generation and beyond, according to the Family Business Insitute via the Boston Globe.

According to a report by Stanford Graduate School of Business, Latino-owned businesses are slightly more likely than White-owned businesses to receive government or corporate contracts, but these contracts tend to be significantly smaller. In 2022, only 13% of Latino-owned businesses had government or corporate contracts, which can be an important source of stability and growth.
